MARGIE WAKEMAN WELLS

AUTHOR & COACH

December 2024

Dear ones,

I am not sure where this year has gone, but a few more wake-ups will find us in 2025. Remember when we were all worried about Y2K? Wasn’t that just a few months ago? In the Wells household, we are celebrating three successful surgeries on an aneurysm condition for my dear husband. He came through with flying colors, and for an almost-92 guy, that is the best reason I can think of to be thankful.

Margie Holds Court is celebrating the release of Just Grammar, my new book on the fundamentals of English grammar. It is 250-plus pages of how the language works: elements of the language, connecting words, phrases and clauses, and the parts of speech. It also includes practice pages to cement the concepts presented and some valuable resources to use in applying the information. It is now available on my web bookstore.

And in conjunction with the release of the book, I want to announce that the grammar class I gave in the fall, “Good Grammar Essentials,” is now available on demand. It is a replay of the recordings of the eight-hour class and is offered for CEUs. At just $20 a unit, it is the best deal in town. Enroll here to start right away.

After the first of the year, I will be offering a series of short classes. At this point, I am considering classes on essential/nonessential, on hyphens, on quotes, on series and perhaps a few others. Be on the lookout for the announcement on the schedule for these sessions. They will be weekend classes of one, two, and four hours, given live, and will be offered for CEUs. Later in the spring/early summer, I will be giving my eight-hour Phrases and Clauses class, one of the most important ones I give for basic understanding of how the language works and applying that knowledge to punctuating the transcript.

As we wind up the year, I am grateful for many things: my husband’s successful surgeries, first and foremost; my always-supportive family and friends; and all of you. I have been blessed beyond measure in this career. I am in the middle of my 60th year of teaching right now. And you all have made it possible. Thank you.

I wish for each of you -- and all of us -- a way forward, a way to work toward an end to the divisiveness, a way toward common ground that benefits all of us and not just a privileged few. May you find the peace and joy of the season in your everyday lives as 2025 unfolds.

Blessings.

Margie

New Book: Just Grammar
by Margie Wakeman Wells

The prequel to Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation — Just Grammar is a straightforward explanation of the basic rules that govern our language, presenting the information that is background for good punctuation.

Online Class:
Good Grammar Essentials

It is the knowledge of grammar that makes everything about dealing with the language simpler: the difference between affect and effect, making sense of a sentence that goes on for fourteen lines, knowing where to put a semicolon rather than a comma. When you can find the subject and verb and know the difference between a phrase and a clause and can spot a verbal, manipulating the language is just easier.

Good Grammar Essentials is the answer – an eight-hour class that covers the basics of the language. We will begin with terminology, move to a discussion of the elements of the language, and end with parts of speech. If you have not had a grammar class recently – or never – join us.

July 2025 Dear ones, July 4 is here with summer in full swing. And the reason I mention July 4 is that, while you are celebrating with barbecue and burgers and dogs and fireworks, you need to know that there is another reason you are celebrating: Bill and I have been married 29 years on the Fourth of July. See how sneaky I was in choosing that date: He could never really forget; we would never have to work; and the whole country joins us for the celebration every year. So Margie Holds Court...

May 2025 Dear ones, And just like that, summer is almost upon us. As a fan of cool weather and nothing over 70, I am not looking forward to the heat.I know/hope you have been wondering why you have not heard from me about the classes I mentioned in the February newsletter. It is not great news: I had a very bad fall in the middle of March – concussion, broken nose, stitches in my lip, sprained knee, and other assorted bruises and tweaks. Life has been and continues to be a series of doctor...

Hello, Reader. And just like that, it is August. Some of us are really looking forward to no more heat and chilly mornings and cool afternoons and even cooler evenings. Okay. So Southern California near the beach is not stifling hot, and “cool” is relative. Fall is still my favorite time of the year. This is the most exciting news I can possibly share at this moment: Just Grammar, my new grammar book, the prequel to Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation, is in the last stages of being proofed and will...
